Barbara S. Gainey (Ph.D., University of South Carolina) is Associate Professor of Communication, Public Relations, at Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, Georgia. She is coordinator of the public relations concentration, the largest concentration in the School of Communication and Media, and the department's online coordinator. Dr. Gainey's research interests include crisis communication/crisis management (particularly in educational settings), public relations, public engagement through new media, and leadership. Dr. Gainey was the founding faculty advisor for Kennesaw State University's PRSSA chapter, and, in 2007, she was awarded The George Beggs Advisor of the Year award. Dr. Gainey also is a member of the KSU Honors Program faculty. Dr. Gainey has more than 20 years of professional communication experience, primarily in public relations in public and corporate sectors. Her most recent publications include an article entitled "Crisis Leadership for the New Reality Ahead," to be published in 2011 in the Journal of Executive Education, an article in the 2010 PR News Crisis Management Guidebook, an article on crisis management in public school districts in the March 2010 Organization Development Journal, and a chapter, "Educational Crisis Management Practices Tentatively Embrace the New Media," in Handbook of Crisis Communication by Coombs and Holladay, published in 2010.
