Message from the Chair

Welcome, students, to the School of Communication & Media! We are pleased to have you join our ranks of nearly 1,400, each aspiring to an undergraduate Bachelor of Science Communication degree with an emphasis in Public Relations, Media Studies, Journalism, or Organizational Communication or a graduate degree in the new Master of Arts in Integrated Global Communication.

Our curriculum is dynamic and progressive, to best meet your needs and the needs of the marketplace. For 2013, we have added two new minors, one in Public Relations for those majoring outside of our department, and one in Crisis Preparedness. The new Crisis Preparedness minor, housed in the School of Communication & Media, is multidisciplinary and will equip students with the knowledge and skills to help lead organizations and communities through crisis situations. A Certificate in Multiplatform News Reporting is the first of our efforts to recognize student focus in specialized communication studies. A new graduate Certificate in Digital and Social Media is awaiting final approval.

The School of Communication & Media has a cadre of dedicated professors with a wide range of teaching and research expertise and many with significant professional experience. In addition to teaching, conducting research and being engaged in university and community service, professors also advise four student organizations to help you grow academically, become a part of professional networks and gain experience in leadership roles. I encourage you to become involved.

Hardworking and caring staff members in the School of Communication & Media are here to assist you with information you need to be successful. An extensive internship program will help you gain valuable work experience before you apply for that first full-time Communication job.

While you may have work, family or other responsibilities, pursuing a university education is a pivotal moment that will affect your career options and other life choices. Make this time count. Along the way to earning your degree, take advantage of the academic and social opportunities available to you. Make the most of your time here at Kennesaw State.

We look forward to getting to know you and guiding you to tap into the tremendous power of effective communication!

Sincerely,
Dr. Barbara Gainey,
Chair, School of Communication & Media
